Outstanding Graduates of International Students | Dmitrii Borovkov: From "Town Youth" to Aircraft Designers

Published:2023-04-07

A "Town Youth" who grew up with the dream of an engineer

Dmitry comes from Astrakhan, a small town in the south of Russia, and his dream since childhood is to design airplanes. After a long period of unremitting efforts and hard work, he obtained very good results in scientific and technical competitions and successfully enrolled in Moscow Aviation Academy, and came to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Aeronautics and Astronautics through the MoFlight double master's program. He said: It is a great honor for Russian students to study at SJTU, and his career started long before he came to Shanghai. Dmitry received a bachelor's degree in rocket science at Moscow Aviation Academy, but when he heard about the joint SJTU-Moscow Aviation Institute Dual Degree Program, he switched to aircraft engineering, and it was one of the right choices he believes he made in life.

A design engineer with both civil and military skills

Dmitry graduated with honors from SJTU-Moscow Aviation Institute. He joined a laboratory as he wished, where, as a design engineer, he managed the projects related to certifying Russian-Chinese CR929 aircraft in the laboratory. Their team of experienced engineers was overall responsible for the calculation of dynamic, static, and fatigue strength of aircraft units, design development of aircraft units, new materials, and processes, evaluation of PCM components manufacturability, and development of certification program for aircraft units are the tasks of the module.

In Russia, Dmitry participated in many competitions, and won the largest competition in Russia - the Russian Leadership Competition. Dmitry was one of the final winners of this competition, in which only 50 out of 30,000 participants from all over the country became winners. In addition, Dmitry participated in many scientific conferences and sports competitions. After joining SJTU, he actively participated in the Freshmen's Games and achieved remarkable results in team tug of war and swimming.

SJTUer, also the youngest lecturer at MAI.

During his studies at the Moscow Aviation Institute, Dmitry proposed a global-to-local sub-modeling method for residual strength calculations of aircraft structures, which was applied in the Russian aircraft industry, focusing on damage and delamination of panels made of polymer composites. In his spare time, Dmitry also managed start-up companies, which were involved in the design of air cabs, the design of electrification of urban transport in Moscow, and the design of racing cars for the Formula Student competition. Within the company, Dmitry was responsible for developing his innovative projects, evaluating and analyzing existing projects, and supporting and implementing the launch of external developers.

The work of Dmitry's team has made Moscow Aviation Institute a beneficiary of the 2030 program funding priority group, which provides up to 1 billion rubles to the best Russian universities. His rich experience and solid research skills made Dmitry the youngest lecturer at the Moscow Aviation Academy, teaching the course: "Modeling of Engineering Problems". But he is never complacent about his lecturership, Dmitry says: "My greatest achievement is studying here! I am very happy to live in this city, to study at this university, and to participate in the various events held here. Although our team doesn't always win, our dedication and hard work win the hearts of the audience every time. As a leader of the Russian students, he is very proud to be surrounded by such an active and multi-talented group of people.
