On the afternoon of July 17, Xu Xuemin, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, met with João Azevêdo Lins Filho, Governor of Paraíba, Brazil, and his entourage at the Minhang Campus.
Xu Xuemin extended a warm welcome to João Azevêdo Lins Filho and his entourage. She said that the BINGO International Radio Astronomy Telescope Project, which Shanghai Jiao Tong University participated in as one of the initiators, is under construction in Paraíba, Brazil, which not only creates a large platform for international scientific research cooperation, but also serves as a bridge connecting Chinese and Brazilian scientists. The promotion of the BINGO project will not only help promote exchanges and cooperation between the peoples of China and Pakistan, but also train more young and promising scientists. In addition, Xu Xuemin reviewed the cooperation between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Brazilian universities in student exchange and summer courses, and looked forward to further exploring more exchange and cooperation projects in the fields of joint research and talent training in the future.
João Azevêdo Lins Filho expressed his heartfelt thanks to Shanghai Jiao Tong University for its warm reception. He said that Shanghai Jiao Tong University is an important partner of Paraíba, and Pazhou universities are willing to carry out more in-depth cooperation with SJTU in the fields of joint scientific research and student exchange, so as to make greater contributions to the development of science and technology and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
Professor Wang Bin of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Professor Elcio Abdalla of the University of São Paulo reported on the progress of the BINGO project on behalf of Chinese and Brazilian scientists.
The delegation of the Governor of Paraíba consisted of 17 members, including the Director of Higher Education, the Director of Communications, the Director of Water and Infrastructure, representatives of the University of São Paulo, the Federal University of Campina Grande, and the Federal Institute of Paraíba.
Relevant comrades from the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the School of Physics and Astronomy, the School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering, and the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange attended the meeting.
Article 33 of the Joint Statement of the People's Republic of China and the Federative Republic of Brazil on Deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership jointly issued by the two countries during the Brazilian President's visit to China in April 2023 mentions support for the BINGO cooperation project. The project will build a large single-aperture radio telescope dedicated to observing the neutral hydrogen gas of the universe in the Brazilian state of Paraíba, detect important signals emitted from the depths of the universe, and reveal the mysteries of the structure of the universe and dark energy. At present, the BINGO project has produced a number of international cooperation scientific research papers. The participating institutions include the Federal University of Campina Grande in Brazil, the University of São Paulo in Brazil, the National Institute of Space Research of Brazil, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Yangzhou University, University of Science and Technology of China, Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc. Shanghai Jiao Tong University is the main initiator of the project, leading the Chinese team and undertaking key scientific tasks.
